Henry Ward Beecher was an abolitionist in the mid to late 19th century. When the Civil War broke out, Beecher traveled throughout the US attempting to gather up support and favor for Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. He made the claim that the Union would beat the Confederates in 60 days. Clearly, it took longer than 60 days. He travelled to England, a country still resentful over the revelutionary war; While he was speaking in Englan, a man cried out: “Why didn’t you whip the Confederates in sixty days, as you said you would?”

With little hesistation he replied, “Because we found we had Americans to fight this time, not Englishmen.”
